About Dr. De Leon
Hector M. De Leon, MD, FAPA is a Board-Certified Psychiatrist and Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association with over 30 years of clinical, academic, and leadership experience. Specializing in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, he is recognized for his expertise in complex diagnostic evaluations, psychopharmacology, and culturally responsive mental health care.
Education & Training
Born in Arecibo, Puerto Rico, Dr. De Leon earned his B.S. in Industrial Microbiology from the University of Puerto Rico, served in the U.S. Army, and earned his M.D. from Universidad Central del Caribe on a U.S. Public Health Service scholarship. He completed his psychiatry residency and child & adolescent fellowship at Duke University, building a foundation in academic medicine, clinical research, and patient-centered care.
Professional Experience
His career began in the National Health Service Corps, delivering community mental health care to underserved populations while teaching at the University of Massachusetts Medical School on transcultural psychiatry. Since 2004, he has led Advanced Behavioral Health Center in Florida as Medical Director and partner, the only Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist in the practice, providing highly specialized care for children, adolescents, and adults.
Community & Teaching
A dedicated educator, Dr. De Leon has trained future physicians through Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM), mentors youth as a Scouts BSA leader for over 20 years, and engages in the arts as a community theater leader. His patients value his depth of knowledge, uniqueness, compassionate approach, and commitment to personalized treatment, while his colleagues respect his vision, integrity, and dedication to advancing psychiatry.
